You may have heard that journaling is a great tool for self-development. It allows you to reflect on where you are, where you want to be and explore your feelings. Although it might not seem much different than teenage girls writing in their diaries (do they even do that anymore?), journaling can be a great tool to help you with your business as well.
As entrepreneurs we can become so caught up in the day-to-day running of our businesses that we don’t take the time to reflect. Some of you reading this may say you don’t have the time to reflect, but I’m not talking about writing pages every night, even a paragraph or two can do wonders! Taking the time to think about what’s working in our businesses and even the things that aren’t on a regular basis is something that we all should be doing. I’ve found that I have gained a great deal of insight into why certain things didn’t play out the way I wanted them to, simply by reviewing my day in written form.
Taking the time to review your journal on a quarterly basis is also a great exercise. You get to see if there are common themes, issues that keep popping up that you haven’t deal with. You also get to see your progress. What was a challenge three months ago may now have turned into a victory. You can see, beyond the bottom line, how you and your company are growing, the lessons that you’ve learned and how they’ve contributed to the evolution of your business.
What’s great about journaling is that the benefit is two-fold. As an entrepreneur, the more self-aware you become, the more clarity you’ll have not only on a personal level, but also for your business. They say a confused mind doesn’t buy, well I don’t think it sells very well either. The clearer you are about what’s working for you and your business, the better you will be able to serve your clients.
Journaling may seem a little “out there” for some, but I challenge you to try it for a week and see what happens. Remember, you don’t have to write an essay. Just think about the day, your interactions. Consider what worked, what didn’t, and what you’re committing to yourself to do better or differently tomorrow. You just might be surprised at the insights and breakthroughs that come when you do!
