The Beauty in Business – 5 Reasons why looks matter

 Praveeni

Looks matter! We all know and have come to accept the fact that appearances, though sometimes deceiving do play a part in how successful we are in life in general. It may come as a surprise to some however that looks matter in business as well. Although this may be a tough pill to swallow for those who believe that clients choose you based on your knowledge, products and customer care, looks do play a large part in the business world. Here are five reasons why looks matter in the business world :

  1. The first impression is a lasting impression

You only get once chance to make a great first impression and it’s rather difficult to recover from a bad one. The initial part of a first impression is based solely on the way you look; when someone sees you for the first time they make a judgment about you before you even have the chance to speak. Thus it’s important to make sure your look represents the message you want to convey through your words.

  1. Potential clients are more likely to listen to people they find attractive

This may sound a little crazy and off-putting but research along with many hidden camera T.V. shows have proven that it is in fact true. If we find a person attractive we would like to spend more time speaking with them and listen to what they have to say. Although what each person finds attractive differs individually the overall package you present (i.e. yourself) should come across as well groomed, friendly and professional.

  1. A professional look helps establish trust

Trust is a key component of winning and retaining clients. In order to gain a client’s business you have to win their trust first. You can gain a client’s trust by looking the part – what would you like a client to think when they see you? Clients usually like to do business with people they cant relate to and those who offer a professional service. It’s important to portray an image of professionalism and approachability. Clients need to know that you have the skills required to provide them with top quality products and services, but they also need to know that they can come to you and speak with you directly if they have a concern.

  1. Looking healthy portrays energy and motivation

Clients ultimately want to do business with people who work hard for them and provide them with the best products/services. As we are now living in the health and fitness revolution maintaining a healthy lifestyle and being in shape is exceedingly important in business. If you look like you take time to look after yourself and make healthy choices clients will notice; looking healthy conveys the message that you are motivated and energized. You don’t have to be a body builder or a fitness model to portray this image but you do need to take time to evaluate your own health and fitness, an area that many entrepreneurs overlook. Make time for you and the results both physical and financial will show.

  1. Your look represents your brand

The way you look is a non-verbal advertisement for your brand. Whether you realize it or not you make a fashion statement everyday with the clothes you choose, the way you do your hair and make up and the manner in which you carry yourself. As an entrepreneur it’s important to make sure that statement accurately represents the brand you’re trying to establish.  People will judge your outfit, accessories, behavior etc. and try to draw parallels between them and the product/services you are trying to market. So before you step out each morning ask yourself – are you on brand? If not, it may be time to re-think that outfit or hairstyle.

Stepping outside your comfort zone

sandra

If you’ve been in business for a while it can be tempting to maintain the status quo.  If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? WRONG! Like anything, if you don’t try new things, growth in your business is going to be challenging to achieve.  Referrals are a great source of new clients, but what else can you do, especially when you don’t have deep pockets for a hard hitting marketing campaign?

Most entrepreneurs acknowledge the need to get out and network in order to gain more visibility, but what else can you do?  Maybe it’s hosting an open house or doing a free information night where you get more than 30 seconds to speak about your business.  As much as public speaking is something many of us would prefer not to do, it is a great opportunity to give potential clients and referral sources a better idea of what it is we do. We don’t have to be Tony Robbins or Oprah Winfrey caliber speakers in order to do presentations.  All we have to do is be authentic and provide valuable (not sales heavy) information.

Maybe it’s time to try your hand at video?  Whether you’re doing YouTube videos, or the short-attention-span friendly Vine, it is another great way to get visibility for yourself and your business.  The benefit of video is that it extends your reach beyond places you can hit locally!  If you’re business can handle global customers then you need to be on a global platform.  Sharing photos on Facebook and catchy 140 character snippets on Twitter can give potential clients an idea of who you are, but video is a great way to really show potential clients more about you and what you do.

For some, blogging is the challenge.  You don’t have to be a Pulitzer Prize winning writer to start a blog.  I feel I was built for blogging.  Writing 20-page essays were always a struggle for me.  Short and to the point is my sweet spot 😉  Like the above suggestions, this works best when you’re being you, sharing tips, tools and knowledge based on your personal experiences, not rhetoric or theory.  I find writing the easiest way to express myself, thanks to the “undo” function and the delete button.  Blogging for me is like a journal entry that I’ve decided to share with anyone who wants to read it.  I hope others find my musings helpful, often it’s a personal reminder of things I need to do for myself 🙂

This is by no means an extensive list of things you can do to stretch your comfort zone.  I list the three above because they seem to be some of the top challenges that a lot of entrepreneurs are struggling with.  If you’re already doing the talks, videos and blogging, what else are you going to do to push the limits on your comfort zone?  Stretching yourself is not only going to benefit your business, but it’s also going to help your personal growth.  Every time we push ourselves, we reduce our limitations and build more confidence to see what else is possible.  What are you going to do expand your comfort zone today?

Identifying your ideal customer

sandra

“What’s your niche?” It’s become one of the most common questions at networking events after “what do you do?” Some of us are clear on who it is we want to work with, others are still a bit foggy. When I first started out in my coaching practice, I thought I wanted to serve everyone who needed my help. The thought of narrowing it down gave me anxiety. I didn’t want to limit my base of potential clients!

The reality is that we can’t serve everyone. When we try to appeal to the masses, our message gets lost. Who are you targeting your products and/or services to? In a perfect world, who would you enjoy working with? These are the types of questions that can help you to narrow down your niche.

Why do we need a niche? Have you ever watched a commercial or seen an advertisement and felt that it was made for you? It’s probably because it was. Good marketing is about knowing who you want to attract and speaking their language in a way that allows them to identify with it and feel like it is the answer they’ve been looking for. Imagine being able to have people come to your website or hear your elevator pitch and immediately say I need to work with her/him!

While your niche is your area of focus, your avatar is the profile of your ideal client. The more detailed you are in your avatar, the better. Consider age, marital status, education, type of employment, salary, and what kinds of challenges they’re facing that your business can help them with. When you’re clear on these areas, it makes everything else that much easier. Your website design is done in a way that your target will find appealing, your blog posts will cover topics of interest to them, and your marketing for products and services will speak to them in a way that makes it a no-brainer for them to make the decision to buy.

Clarity on your niche and an avatar of your ideal client allow you to create marketing messages that speak to your audience. If you aren’t clear on who you want to work with, then your marketing message may be all over the place. To quote my business coach “a confused mind does not buy”. If you’re ideal client isn’t clear on what you can do for them or why they should work with you, you’re going to have a difficult time generating the kind of revenue that’s going to help you build a sustainable business!

It can be scary to feel like you’re narrowing your pool of potential customers, especially when you’re first starting out. No matter what kind of business you’re in, the competition out there for a client’s attention and their business is fierce. You need to stand out; you need to identify with your potential clients. It’s impossible to be everything to everyone, so think about who you really want to work with and start to develop an action plan to get their attention and help them realize that you’re the answer they’ve been looking for.
